Amy's Choice. Your views.
Well, we're now more than half way through Series 5. Here's what you're saying........
Kate Griffiths: I really enjoyed it. It was a bit different but in a good way. It was an interesting theme. Dreams are something we can all relate to. What the Doctor and Rory wanted to be the reality was the complete opposite, which you would expect. It seemed to have a slower pace and not as frantic as some episodes which was no bad thing.
It was interesting at the end when the Doctor was reavealed to be the Dream Lord, perhaps he is in a way for some of us who would like nothing better than to hear the TARDIS materialising in our gardens. It was so nice that Amy finally realised she loves Rory. Call me a sentimental old fool but there was a tear in my eye at the end when she told him she only chose one reality because he died in the other. Magical.
John Howe: A bit quirky this week but no less entertaining. It was almost like the series was taking a short “linking theme” break to gather its thoughts. Top notch stuff nonetheless. This was a full on rake around the Doctor’s mind. It showed not only that he does care for Amy, but also the fact that he although he might not want to admit it, he is in competition with Rory for her.
Once again though we are dragged back to RTD’s notion of the lonely Time Lord when it becomes apparent that even though the Doctor offers excitement and adventure on a regular basis he still loses. Amy ultimately chooses Rory. The two different realities betray the competition beautifully. Rory offers the domestic stability of a normal life, house, family and all its trappings in Upper Leadworth whilst the Doctor’s world is that of the
TARDIS. The one place that is guaranteed to lead to the aforementioned adventure and excitement. For all the wonders of the TARDIS though the Doctor loses his subconscious battle and is destined to continue on as the lonely wanderer.
In the past we’ve seen the manifestation of the Valyard but the Dream Lord is an altogether darker side of the Doctor’s personality. “There’s only one person in the universe who hates me this much”. To find out that it is
the Doctor himself was indeed a surprise. For all his bravado in the past, here he betrays the self doubt that plagues him. Super performances all round again this week with particular credit to Toby Jones as the Masterish Dream Lord full of both bile and charm at the same time. Also to Arthur Darvill as Rory really cementing his place as a full on companion to the Doctor. Loads more great gags and one liners this week which I expected from the pen of Simon Nye, the creator of “Men Behaving Badly”.
All in all a nicely pitched mid season episode.
