The Time of Angels. A final word

The final word this week comes from Mike Basil, and looks at the Weeping Angels.

"I've thought more about the return of the Weeping Angels and their original impact in Blink. Now I think they're appropriate for a new returning monster, depending on how many stories they'll be allowed, because they're a throwback to the gothic tradition of Doctor Who in the 70s. I think Blink could be the most Whoniversally scary story for Dr. Who since the classic series' homage to Frankenstein, The Brain Of Morbius. This is for the Weeping Angels' obvious gothic qualities. They're frightening mostly when we behold them while they're suspended because we know they have the deadly upperhand when we don't see them. That's frightening enough to qualify as gothic for me.

The unseen can be quite easy to fear. Often in the original Doctor Who, you'd be permitted to look through an evil alien's sight at an imminent victim at first. Later at the right moment in the story you're allowed to see what the evil alien looks like. This worked with the Wirrn, the Rutan and the Haemovore. A groundbreaking scare
tactic for the Weeping Angels is that it's reversed. The evil alien seen through our sight, particularly through the sight of the human characters, is more profound in Blink than most fans remember from the classic series. If the Weeping Angels can revive the gothic aspects of Dr. Who, I look forward to seeing what's next.

Maybe the return somehow of Mr. Sin isn't too far off the mark."
